Good lord, what a bunch of nasty people... [ 2003-06-26, 8:59 p.m. ]

Lots of comments about "undesirable" people on the block, people whose homes don't look tidy, etc. One woman was ranting about the building across the street from mine -- the plants are ragged, it looks awful, blah blah blah. I interrupted to tell her that a seventy-nine year old man lives alone in that house and that maybe some of us could offer to help him with yard work. She had nothing to say after that. The rest of the meeting was more of the same - not any real sense of community or "let's help each other out" -- more like "let's finish off our takeover". Disgusting.

It was funny to me that almost everyone prefaced their comments with "since I moved here in 1999...or 1998" as if they were trying to one-up each other in their urban pioneerism. Guess what? I've lived here since 1988...and...and...guess what else?! There were people who lived here before me! Imagine! And I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I hear tell thar was Injuns in this land before the Europeans arrived. Landsakes!

The other bright spot was finding out that the increase in gang activity is due primarily to the fact that two head honchos of the local gang were just released from ten-year prison terms...and are trying to re-establish in this area. As scary as that may sound to you, it is less distressing to me than the other shit because now that the self-righteous taxpayers are moving in, the police and alderman will have too much pressure on them to ignore the problem that has plagued this neighborhood for thirty years...
