Heard some sad news about a friend via another friend and I would like to reach out to this person but I am not sure how to do it...or whether it would be well-received...

I had so thoroughly convinced myself of something...and today, something just snapped in me and I decided I couldn't possibly be right about it...and I think I have resigned myself to never knowing for sure, so it's easier to think...NOT.
