"Inner Space Cavernnnnnnn!" [ 2004-10-18, 8:45 p.m. ]

Yesterday, S. and I ventured to lovely Georgetown, TX to visit the Inner Space Cavern. What lured us there, you ask? Their sign, which was erected in the early 60's and hasn't changed since.

The cavern was discovered in 1963 by road crews testing underpass foundations for I-35. For reasons I haven't been able to ascertain, the cavern is privately owned and operated. It's staffed by bored college students including our own tour guide Daniel, whose monotone (combined with the high humidity in the cave) almost lulled me to sleep. At the onset of the tour, poor S. was befriended by some craggy old hippie who kept whacking S. on the arm and calling him "dude". (He also managed to allude to his roadie work with "Willie" more than he needed to...)

The featured formations on the cavern tour all have cheesy, space-themed names (ie "The Lake of the Moon") which were obviously named before anyone had actually been to the moon. There apparently were some well-preserved mammoth and sabre-tooth tiger skeletons found in the silt at the original cave entrances, but all you see are pictures of them as they now reside in museums elsewhere. But it's a very pretty cavern and the gift shop is stocked with suitably ridiculous souvenirs, so all in all it was worth the trip.
